Enable Microsoft Office Updates Mac

If you're using an Office 365 subscription to access Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, you've probably noticed new visual changes and features appear quite frequently. This is because Office, similar to Windows 10, uses automatic updates to ensure that apps are always up to date with the latest security patches, improvements, and features.

However, if the updates are causing problems in your installation, or a new release became available with visual changes and features that you don't need, it's possible to disable automatic updates completely in Office 365 as well as in the standalone version.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the easy steps to completely disable updates for the suite of apps, whether you're using Office 365 or the standalone version, including Office 2016, Office 2019, and older versions.

How to disable automatic updates for Microsoft Office

To stop getting updates and features for Office on Windows 10, use these steps:

To download an update manually, see Office Updates. Go to Control Panel Programs Uninstall a program. Find and select your version of Microsoft Office on your computer. In the bar above, click Change. Select Quick Repair Repair. If this does not work, retry. May 13, 2019 Click the “Find out more” link to switch to Microsoft Update. If it is not available, click on the “Change settings” link on the left and you should be able to select the option: Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows. Enable Microsoft Update in Windows 7 or Windows 8 to get Office updates too.

Open an Office app, such as Word.
Create a new blank document.
Click on File.
Click on Account.
On the right side, click the Update options menu.
Select the Disable Updates option.
Click the Yes button to confirm.

Once you complete these steps, your Office apps will no longer download and install updates automatically.

Updates for Office 2016 for Mac are available from Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). To use Microsoft AutoUpdate, start an Office application, such as Word, and then choose Help > Check for Updates. If you're an admin and want to update the computers in your organization with your existing software deployment tools, you can download and deploy the update packages for each application.
